Joint Injections

BACKGROUND

  • Joint injections treat the inflammation inside a joint, leading to decreased swelling and pain.

  • Patients receive a direct injection of a steroid & local anesthetic into the affected joints or bursae.

PROCEDURE

  • This can be used as part of a treatment plan for people with arthritis or bursitis.

  • The steroid medication is injected to temporarily decrease pain and stiffness.

  • The improvement in inflammation, swelling and joint pain can last for a few months before wearing off, although often the pain relief can last for many months to years.
